Holmfirth in Bloom
Holmfirth is to compete in the small towns category of this year’s
Britain in Bloom competition.
Spring judging has already taken place back in April and the town is
making ready to impress the summer judges on July 9.
The signs are good so far that the stunning floral displays in the town
will win a prize in this year’s competition. All the planting has been
completed and hanging baskets and flower barrels have been placed around
the town including the first herb barrel!
Three local schools have been taking part – Lydgate Special School,
Brockholes Junior, Infant and Nursery School and Holme Junior and Infant
School. They have produced colourful posters for Yorkshire In Bloom
some to be placed in shop windows around the town on the day the judging
will take place. Vegetables and flowers have been planted at Brockholes
and Lydgate schools and the judges will be visiting them on the day.
Holme will be planting spring bulbs to get ready for next year’s
competition.
Kirklees Council is running the Holmfirth In Bloom and Tidy Trader
competitions at the same time as the judging takes place for Britain in
Bloom. All businesses in the town are to be judged on their floral
displays and the visual impact of their shopfront, from clean windows to
litter. Judging is carried out by local councillors, members of the
Civic Society and Kirklees Council. An award ceremony is held after
judging to present trophies to the winners in late summer.
Cllr Christine Stanfield, Cabinet member for Regeneration (South) told Holmfirthweb.com:
“I wish Holmfirth all the best in the Britain in Bloom competition.
Everyone has worked very hard to make the town ready and the results are
being appreciated by visitors and residents alike. Special thanks to
David Collins who waters the Holmfirth plants and the Bradley Nursery
Team who sow and plant hanging baskets and barrels. They all do a
wonderful job.”
