Holme Valley’s Major Gritting Routes Listed

Posted by patrick under: News; Uncategorized .

Only major routes are to be regularly gritted after today (Mon, Jan 11) in an effort to conserve dwindling grit stocks as the Big Freeze continues. Holmfirthweb.com has been issued with a list of local Valley routes which are to be regularly treated.

Kirklees Council say reducing the number of roads treated will allow it to keep its strategic road network moving until more grit supplies become available. Once more grit has been delivered, the council will be able to get back into the priority network.

Roads that will continue to be treated are major strategic routes, mainly “A” roads (and some “B” roads). They include major bus stations, hospitals, fire stations and major ambulance stations.

The council will also try to make sure that all high schools and their bus routes are included to allow access for exams this week.

Some bus routes on residential streets which are not on the strategic network will not be covered. People may therefore find that they nowhave a longer walk to catch their bus on a nearby main road, but this is much safer than trying to operate bus services on untreated roads.

The council is working closely with METRO to try to make sure that bus services continue to serve as many people as possible during this difficult time. For information about affected bus services, please contact MetroLine travel information on: 0113 245 7676 (7am to 10pm, seven days a week).

The council’s winter maintenance teams will continue responding to any urgent requests from the emergency “blue light” services and will hand treat in town centres where necessary.

Cllr David Sheard, Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, said: “We are working closely with all our partner agencies in Kirklees to enable the strategic road network to remain open and for essential services to be available where needed.

“We have never had to take this action before and I hope the weather conditions improve so that it is only temporary.

“Salt stocks are dependent on us receiving allocations from the government*s “Salt Cell” and all local authorities in West Yorkshire are in the same situation with regards to new supplies.

“These truly are exceptional circumstances and hopefully residents understand the need for grit supplies to be conserved until stocks can be replenished.

“The government is currently asking all local authorities in the country to cut their grit use by 25%.

“Anyone whose wellbeing is at risk and who needs help because they can’t get out should contact the council’s newly-launched 24 hour winter weather helpline on 01484 414888. This emergency number is for people who are in desperate need of provisions such as food or fuel or prescription medicines.  Please do not use it to make gritting requests.”

For further updates please check the council’s website at www.kirklees.gov.uk (see their winter weather page) or listen to local radio stations.
