Meltham Youth Club Takes to Four Wheels
Posted by patrick under: News .
Young people in Meltham are the latest to be able to sample new facilities on offer from a new mobile youth club service.
Holmfirthweb.com is currently campaigning to have the facility extended to Holmfirth, where it could particularly benefit kids who meet at Sands and in the co-op car park.
The unique service is currently being introduced to Meltham and discussions are underway with youngsters in the area to decide where would be the best location to park in order to attract as many as possible to come
and make use of the facilities on offer.
The bus itself can accommodate around 20 young people on board and more
in the area outside. It is currently visiting the village every
Wednesday night from 7pm and aims to attract those in the 13-19 age
range.
The previous village youth club attracted low numbers in an unsuitable
building and the decision was taken to increase provision through
introducing the mobile service which is already proving a hit with young
people in other areas.
The mobile service is par
ticularly useful in being able to provide
services to young people across large rural areas as the club can simply
be driven to other places and is therefore very flexible.
Facilities available on and through the youth bus include: internet
access, games console, arts and crafts, sports, circus skills and
Dj-ing. There are also plans to add resources to enable modern music and
film editing projects through the IT.
It also includes a lot of information on a multitude of activities
available for young people across Kirklees including advice and guidance
on educational opportunities plus life skills information on sexual
health, drugs and alcohol, and crime and health.
The service is proving popular in places where it has already become a
regular feature and it has allowed groups of youngsters from different
areas to come together in shared activities.
In South Kirklees the mobile service has a Friday night project in
Salendine Nook and is at the research stage in Almondbury, Flockton and
Grange Moor so young people in those areas are encouraged to look out
for it and come and join in and give their views.
Cllr Cath Harris, Cabinet member for Children and Young People, told Holmfirthweb.com:
“Instead of youngsters going to the club, the club can come to
them! The mobile service should prove to be a huge boost to Meltham and
provide modern facilities for young people to use and exciting
activities for them to take part in.”
Quotes from happy customers in other areas include:
“It gives me something to do on an evening instead of staying in and
watching TV.”
“I’m grounded and Mum only lets me come out to the bus coz she
loves everything about it and thinks it’s good for me.”
“I enjoy going to places and doing activities away from Cowersley as
well.”
Anyone wanting more information on the Meltham mobile service is
encouraged to visit on Wednesday evenings or contact Emily Pearson on
